Elizabeth Mayne - A Legacy of Compassion and Service

Elizabeth Mayne

Elizabeth Mayne was a woman of quiet strength, unwavering compassion and deep moral conviction and a strong catholic faith. Known for her humility and warmth, she dedicated her life to serving others, offering comfort through kind words, heartfelt advice, and open-hearted generosity. Her home became a sanctuary for many—offering support, solace and a sense of belonging to those in need.

A Home Where All Were Welcome

In the tranquil by lanes of Frazer Town, Bangalore, stood her modest home—a place imbued with warmth, laughter, and the unmistakable aroma of home-cooked meals. Though she raised five children as a single mother, there was always room for one more at her table. Without fail, an extra plate was laid at every meal, a quiet but profound tradition.

"You Never Know Who Might Need A Meal"

"You never know who might need a meal" she would often say, embodying her philosophy of generosity and inclusivity. Whether it was a passing stranger, a neighbour in distress, or a friend of her children, all were welcomed with equal grace.

Elizabeth faced significant challenges. Having relocated to Bangalore in the 1970s with limited resources, she persevered with quiet dignity. To sustain her family, she conducted home tuitions, relying on modest earnings. Yet, in her home, love, integrity, and resilience prevailed. She instilled in her children the values of self-reliance, shared responsibility and service to others. Her kindness was not an occasional gesture—it was a way of life, practiced daily and with intention.

Birth Of A Legacy - Elizabeth Mayne Foundation

In 2004, more than a decade after her passing in 1992, Elizabeth Mayne's enduring spirit of service found renewed expression. A charitable home on Hennur Road, Bengaluru, operated by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, sought support for their work with children from distressed backgrounds. This call deeply resonated with Elizabeth's son, Eugene Mayne, and the family, who saw in it an opportunity to carry forward her values.

In 2018, the Elizabeth Mayne Foundation (EMF) was formally established. Conceived as a living tribute to her legacy, the Foundation reflects the principles she lived by: Compassion, Dignity, Resilience and Unwavering Support for the Vulnerable.

Today, the Elizabeth Mayne Foundation—managed and operated by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus—serves as a sanctuary for children in need. The Foundation offers safe shelter, nutritious meals, educational assistance, and emotional support, nurturing each child's journey toward stability, self-worth, and independence. Single Mothers / women have found space to be with their children and as a house mother to the many other children in the home.

What began as an extra plate at a family table has evolved into a far-reaching mission—a second chance for children in crisis and a beacon of hope for countless lives. Through the Foundation, Elizabeth Mayne’s legacy of kindness and service continues to flourish, one child at a time.
